I constantly hear people say things like “Without social media everyone would be more present.” I agreed with this statement until I was given a new perspective when I visited China this past spring.

I flew to Beijing, China with my Husband and extended family this past April. If you haven’t been to China I highly recommend putting it at the top of your bucket list. China is so beautiful and I took a lot of pictures while I was there but.. I couldn’t post them. Chinese government does not allow much social media. Even Google is blocked! I found that Bing worked but the online platforms I typically rely on were taken away from me.

My first thought was what do these people do without social media like Facebook and Instagram? They must really enjoy the outdoors and interacting with each other in other ways. I soon realized that I was wrong. We often rode the subway to get from place to place and the amount of people on their phones was the same if not more than what I would see on the subway in Boston. It amazed me that even without Facebook and Instagram people used their phones the same amount as with it! A lot of the phone use I saw was for photos and direct messaging. I remember thinking what’s the use of taking so many photos if you can’t post them? I wonder what we would do in America if we lost most of our social media platforms…
